I got some planet x wheels for my new bike that look pretty cool but what I really want is something that looks like these old shamals....

I'm running 10 speed shimano so what would be a modern alternative rim I could use to build wheels like this?

I appreciate I'll have to use more spokes. I've seen velocity deep v rims but wonder if these are ok to build up geared.

Anyone know anything else deep and silver preferably with stickers of transfers that would be removable if on the rims at all?

Cheers

That Shamal rim is 16 spoked so you should be able to find rims and hubs. I've got the 12 spoke front version and its a fantastic wheel. Can't you look around for a second hand pair?

There is a second hand pair I can get, reckon I could build a shimano 10 speed hub on the rear then?

No reason why not. Alternatively you can still pick up campag rims of that era with similar sections and different drillings (e.g. Atlantas) which you can build up as you like. Be aware though, they're pretty heavy rims, really only good for TTs.

Cool I'll look into it. May be a silly question but could you lace a 16 hole rim to a 32 hole hub?

Yes, but not with a radial spoke pattern.

There's no reason you can't use Velocity Deep Vees on a road hub - but the profile isn't quite a aero as the original Shamal. FWIW a German magazine did an 'aero' test a few years ago and the Shamal whupped much of the fancy carbon stuff
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
  • I have read contrasting reviews about the Pro-Lite wheels but the Pro-Lite Bracciano wheels seem to have a lot of fans and come in polished silver although they are only 27mm deep - http://www.pro-lite.net/index.php?optio ... &Itemid=49. I am not sure if they sell the rim alone but it might be worth checking..

Awesome, going for some of these when the budget allows I reckon.

I expect that the Velocity and HSon rim is from the same source.

I dunno Monty but there's a couple of guys on here who have built these rims geared with apparent great success so I'm gonna give them a go.

Went down to BLB a minute ago to have a butchers at the rims and they are very very nice, as close as I'll get to those shamals and a lot lighter I'll wager.

Gonna go back down and grab some this afternoon.

Was thinking about Ambrosio Zenith hubs (32h f+r) unless anyone has any other ideas for around £70 a pair.

Should work out a bit below 2kg for the pair incl DA skewers not that I'm a WW or anything, I'm using a Brooks saddle, but it's an acceptable weight.
