Low end choices...

I'm completely lost in the world of MTB buying but have decided that I want something better than my current early 90s cro-mo with a cheap suntour fork added on. In all, it's too heavy, has rubbish stopping power and generally isn't ideal for modern trails...

So, I've been looking around a bit and came up with the following choices, I am struggling to find out a great deal about them, specifically if they are generally alright. My use is twofold. Pottering around flat semi-paved parks with the kids and slowing everyone down on technical single tracks with friends.

Suggestions I've given myself are as follows. Basically the spec is that they're all below £450 and have hydraulic brakes and lockout on the forks.

GT Avalanche 2.0 Disc - this has a hydraulic fork
Giant Terrago - Deore which seems like a good spec for the mech?
Claude Butler Cape Wrath D27 2009 - deore again, 180mm rotors, does that make much difference?
Mongoose Tyax Elite

Any comments on them?

    Add the Carrara Kraken to your list.

    have you ever checked out supersonics budget build threads ? you could butcher the old bike for anything useable and morph it into a new bike...

    the kraken would be a good option as well, make sure your local halfordss set it up right

    Gotta admit, the Kraken was removed from the list because it's Carrera, I bought the Vanquish road bike and eventually got it diagnosed as having had a bent frame out of the factory. I have however noticed that they have some support here, so guess it's worth a try.

    Obviously I'd love to try them all out, but realistically I'll likely be buying blind. On the bright side I've got a good idea of sizing from experience.

    Oh, and no offence to bikeradar, but how do I go about finding 'supersonic's budget' post?

    Search :wink:

    There are a number of these threads, just use the search option in the top right. Should bring up a few - type in budget bike build and click the search for all terms, plus enter my name.

    This KHS, that Bike Radar have just recently reviewed, looks very tasty for the price;
