Ive got the opportunity to buy a frame cheap and was thinking of building one up as a trail bike.

Would be good, that's what I use mine for. Depending how heavy you are, it will do everything except larger jumps.

How cheap and which version - alu or carbon?

its the spark 50 but with a shock upgrade to the one used on the spark 10. and about £300

That's a reasonable price. Westbrook are selling the 40 at £599, but that is brand new with a warranty and with the standard shock.
