Looking to buy my first road bike this weekend. Can anyone recommend any LBS in the Midlands?

I live in derby and am willing to travel about 1 hour. Looking to get a professional fit etc.

Cheers

    Epic Cycles, near Bromyard.
Most definitely worth the effort.
Start with a budget, finish with a mortgage!
  • There is also Julie's Cycles in Leicester, if you can put up with the Leicester accent *shudder*

    Mercian Cycles in Alvaston.
    Leisure Lakes in Breaston
Samways on Ashbourne Road (I actually don't know what they're like anymore, I'm just naming really local bike shops that I remember from when I lived there).
JE James in Chesterfield or Rotherham
    Total Fitness Nottingham (Beeston)
    Stanley Fearns in Matlock

Have a look at some of the local bike club websites, they may have links or details of local shops - and local recommendations. Derby Mercury, VC Long Eaton, Nottingham Clarion etc.......

Heard good things about Epic Cycles before, bit of a trek but sounds worth it.

Going to try Samways for sure too.[/quote]

I got my cube from Samways - it feels like quite a mainstream shop but once I got served (it was a tad busy!) I thought the customer service was excellent. Managed to haggle a few bits into the deal. Test ride outside. So a very positive response.

I practically live next door to Leisure Lakes and never feel quite as comfortable.... they do seem to have almost doubled the bike stock in store recently tho (its a smallish shop compared to Samways) .

Total fitness is more a Tri shop - not a massive range of bikes in, but Ive been in for a few things usually when Im after advice. Prices are a bit higher (even compared to their own internet site) but its sometimes worth it for the advice. First time I went in for running trainers however, the manager twice discounted them and Id not even asked for a discount!!!

    Mercian for sure.
Samways are ok, Holts Cycles are great for repairs and servicing but carry a limited range, Scott and a couple others.

Another vote for Epic - plus you'll get a free fitting. Terrain around there is quite similar to the terrain of the white peaks and the area between the white peaks and Derby, which is handy ;)

i dunno who you dealt with but in the past that ive been there they havent been the most welcoming :?

And another for epic I drove from Manchester and back for a test ride. They are simply superb. you won't be disappointed

If you want much in the way of a professional type bike fit I think you'll struggle with any of the shops in or around Derby. I went round with a mate looking for a new bike about this time last year and to be honest I was shocked at the lack of or poor service and advice offered - including from some of the shops recommended above.

I'm not saying they are necessarily bad shops - if you know what you want a few will do a really good deal and some are very good at repairs and servicing - but as far as advice on buying a road bike I'd either take a clued up mate or travel elsewhere.

it's a hard life if you don't weaken.
