So I've got some Maxis High Rollers and Minions, both at 2.35. They do seem (as predicted by others on here) to have been rounded off by the Mavic XC717 rims.

Using this as a good excuse to look at a couple of wheels solely for Wales/Alps trips I tried to make sense of the Mavic wheels looking for strong 'All Mountain' rims. My guess is somewhere between 17mm and 29mm is what I am looking for....

but can anyone suggest what rim width I should be aiming for when using 2.35 MAXIS?

I've only said MAVIC as i get confused by all the other makes. But I'll take any advice I can get.

Oh yeah - and are Hope 2 hubs any good?

The rims quickly get heavier as they get wider - personally I would look at the EN521

The hubs have many fans, run on cartridge bearings which a lot prefer, and are relatively light. I am not a fan though lol.

I use Hope Pro2's on Mavic 719's on my Coiler for AM/FR duties. No complaints so far, been on there for about 18 months now. Only issue would be the complaints made by other riders about the load ticking sound the freehub makes...

I have to confess I get confused by all the different rim numbers, but my all mountain bike came with Mavic EN-321 and I run exactly the same combination of tyres as you with no problems and the rims have stood up to quite a pounding so far!

I can also recommend the Hope hubs, mine have run with no complaints at all, really easy to service yourself. One thing though, the rear hub makes a loud ratchety noise when free wheeling this is a bit love/hate i have found, I personally love it as I use it when coming up behind walkers, but some people say it get's on their nerves.

How about one of the stans rims, the arch i think is the appropriate one. Pretty light and ready to convert.
