Buckled rim - fix it or bin it?
After a little 'off' at Hillingdon last night I have reasonably buckled front wheel, in the truing stand there is some sizeable wobble on about 1/4 of the wheel and also some gouging where it hit the deck. Unfortunately the wheel isn't that old (its a Shimano WH-R600) and was a warranty replacement, the hub and spokes appear to be fine.
I'm inclined to bin it (actually I'll use it to practice wheel building), so the questions.
1. Can I get a replacement rim, I can't seem to locate any
2. Is it fixable if I dismantle it, I'd be slightly concerned fixing it on safety grounds
3. If not 1. what about alternative rims or is it chav to ride with different wheels
Not sure how common it is but these wheels have the nipples at the hub end.
Thanks for any advice.

Hi
Depends on if the rim is dented or not.
If you have a truing stand, or even in the front forks, I would try and true it.
Factory wheels are chuck away, and the companies would rather you bought a new wheel so spare parts are non existant.
Are they bladed or round spokes? You could buy another rim and rebuild. Have a look on the internet, there are loads of resources about wheel building, and give it a go.0 -
You should be able to get a new rim from your LBS via Madison, Shimano Distributors.
Generally, there's nothing more complicated about rebuilding factory wheels - just that component design has been optimised for the design of the wheel. For the R600s nipples are blind so you need to use a nipple-driver rather than a spoke key - as spokes are straight-pull, you need to ensure that they don't twist as you tighten the nipples and stress-relieving the spokes is more critical.Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..0 -
Thanks for the replies.
I do have a truing stand and subsequent to my post I tried to true it, I couldn't even get it close so I'll use it for building practice.
Good advice about Madison, thanks.0
