Converting 9 speed to less.

I have taken a few cogs off of a rear cassette. Can I convert or limit my shifter (XTR 9 speed) to only play with six cogs and not throw off my chain at the point it changes to a cog which is now not there?

You need to adjust the rear mech, rather than the shifter. Just set the limit screws so that it won't go past the last cog.

Check the Park Tool website for info on adjusting mechs, if you need it.

Can you adjust the limit screw as far back as that though? 3 cogs is a lot of movement.

I have taken the two largest sprockets off. The adjustment screw is not long enough for the adjustment.
I suppose I could get a longer screw.
Just wondered of there was a 'setting' to be done in the shifter pod.

No, nothing to adjust on the shifter itself.

You can modify the shifters, but they are not designed to be.

WHy not just use a 7 speed shifter and cassette and spacer? The sale of your stuff should easily cover it.

You could try longer adjuster screws, if you can find them...

Why on earth would you only want 6 sprockets though ? I understand that you probably only use 6 of them, but surely it's not just to save weight ?
