Handlebar stem question
I believe the stem on my trek 1000 is 100mm in length. I am 5 feet 9 inches and I ride with my hands on the hoods. Id like it if the hoods were 10 - 20 mm closer to me , where do you suggest that I could get an affordable stem 80 - 90 mm in length that would be a drop in fit for my trek 1000, and can you point out any particular stems you think would be suitable ? Im hoping not to have to spend too much.

Pretty much ALL stems will fit ALL modern road bike forks whether 1 1/8" steerer or 1"
steerer(with a shim). All you really need to know is the length you want and the bar size, which is either 26mm or 31.8mm.0 -
done a bit of research
the stem at present is a bontrager select 17 degree type and the bars are 26 mm, does a replacement HAVE to be 17 degrees also ? how do i know if i need 1 1/8 or 1 inch or does that matter ?0 -
It doesn't have to be 17 degrees - but changing from this would affect the height of the bars.
There looks to be the same as you currently have in a choice of lengths @ £15 http://www.wheelbase.co.uk/product_6054.htmCycling weakly0 -
If you are changing to a shorter stem then you can afford to go a bit lower on the "angle" as the bars will be closer to you anyway. Why not take your stem along to a decent Halfords, they have some "Bikehut" stems at reasonable prices and you can compare side by side.He is not the messiah, he is a very naughty boy !!0

Hi
The Trek 1000 is quite "low" at the front anyway, so you might find that buying a shorter stem (8 or 9cm) with 6 degree rise will raise the bars by a few millimetres. This is likely to be more comfortable than a 17 degree stem.
But, before you spend any money, why not try flipping the stem? It will point up (and you may not like the look) but it will give you a slightly shorter reach.
