Shimano index indicator

Thought I'd ask this here too as it might get a better response than the commuting workshop. Apologies for the crosspost
I just noticed that the gear indicator on my bike is out by one gear, i.e. when I'm on the second largest cog on the rear derailleur the indicator is as far to the left as it can go, I can still change to the largest cog, but the needle doesn't move much. When I'm on the smallest cog, there's space to the right of the indicator. Not that I use the indicator much, but is it possible to adjust this? I think it's Shimano Deore.
Thanks,
Tom

Thanks I'll try that later. Maybe I'm just being blind, but I can't see where it says that it's done like this in the manual though.0

it shouldn't need to be re-alligned manually, i rebuilt a deore lh shifter after my housemate managed to get the cable nipple stuck between the workybits and the body and when i put it back together it was wrong, so i clicked the shifter to the limit of it's movement and it autocorrected itself.0
