Hollowtech II Triple Spacer
I've just bought a Shimano Hollowtech 2 triple (Sora FC-3403) and the instructions say to put a spacer on the non-drive side between the crank and BB. This spacer was not supplied, do I really need one and should it have been supplied ?
( I have replaced an Octalink triple )

ive got a hollowtech 2 working well without any spacer(dont see the need for one).going downhill slowly0

depends on how wide your bottombracket shell is...0
-
well i fitted it tonight without a spacer and it fits OK, but the left crank is closer to the chainstay , than the right crank. I guess the spacer is used to even it up.
Hardtailguy - can you explain the statement about how wide the BB shell is. I used a Tiagra external 68 mm BB.0 -
I took my 105 triple apart the other day and noticed a fairly chunky plastic spacer on one side, but I can't remember which0

Tiagra triple has a thick plastic spacer (10mm ?) on the chainring side and a thin plastic washer/spacer on the non-drive side.
According to the Shimano diagram the Sora should be the same, see parts 6 and 11 in the diagram

Spacer / Washer Part 6 did not get supplied, the question is should it have been , and do I really need it and what does it do ?0

Without it on the drive side the inner chainring will bash the chainstay (probably, it does on mine) and also without it you`ll have a gap when you come to tighten up the plastic centre cap on the other side. They don`t put that sort of thing on there for nothingJens says "Shut up legs !! "

Just fitted some of these too (chainreaction - bargain at £25!) and they also didn't come with the spacer.
I got one from the LBS (3mm plastic) and they are now fitted fine - including the spacer which did come with them (6.5mm for the drive side).
I've just roughly measured and both crank arms are pretty much 6.5cm from the centre of the frame, so it seems correct. Just weird the 3mm spacer wasn't supplied with the cranks.0 -
Yes, I had to buy the spacer also.
Does anyone know if the the ring which is normally housed in the left crank has to be taken out and put inside the spacer. What does this ring do ?
The shimano docs seem to differ, the service instructions do not mention the ring, however the parts diagram shows the ring before the spacer.
The service instructions are the same for all triples (Sora, Tiagra, 105 etc )

Any decent bike shop with a Madison account. Ask them to order part number 1GF 1100 for you. It's a post free spare so they can get it without making up a larger order.0
