Hey folks,

I am planning to spend up to 2k on a decent road bike so i’m looking to do my research and get some good advice and recommendations. I bought a bike on mail order about three years ago and promised never to do again as the fit and feel were all wrong!. I quickly got shot of it and made a promise to buy from local dealers who have a good range of makes and models.

The bikes that would be up for grabs include Wilier, Bianchi, Lapierre, Trek, Cube and Beone.

Does anyone have pointers for me on what would be the best brand, most reliable, level of stiffness and so on?. If you have one of these brands, what are your thoughts on the bike in general?

Also have a preference for an aluminium frame possibly with carbon forks and drops out to help me over the odd pot hole etc. Does anyone have any thoughts on this selection?

Looking forward to some help

M

Go to your LBS and do some test rides. What's right for one person might not be right for another. Pick the brains of your LBS's

    Good advice from PV above.

I have spent an exhaustive 3 months searching for the "right" bike. After trying loads of different models I shortlisted to Bianchi C2C or Trek Madone 4.9.

Both bikes felt great and I had determined I needed a 55cm in the Bianchi or a 56cm in the Trek. Then financial trauma - Daughter crashed her car and I had to lend her £1000 to sort it all out - insurance excesses etc but thats a different story. Dilemma was bike fund money halved and more waiting just as the weather was turning and light nights. Bummer! So decided to see if I could find chosen bike second hand.

Came across a Trek Madone 5.9 with full Ultegra SL groupset which was a higher spec all round than the 4.7 I had shortlisted. It was a classified ad and after a quick spin on the bike and check over (it felt better than the 4.7 and same geometry) I bought it.

Absolutely thrilled with it and a complete Trek convert now. Just an amazing ride.

You can see pics in the Your Bikes section under Madone 5.9.

Go see what you like, what feels right and ticks the eye candy box. All of your listed Makers provide excellent machines and it comes down to personal preference and fit in the end. As others will recommend their preferred rides I can say the Trek Madones are a class piece of kit - but go find out for yourself.
