This guy is properly, properly nuts.

But insanity's probably a good solution for escaping the pain. Why anyone would even enter RAAM entirely escapes me...

Great article. Frightening and inspiring at the same time!0

Why is it crazy, if I was offered a place on a team tomorow I'd jump at the chance. Just think of the miles
The guy is nuts to do it solo, but what an inspiration. You only ever find out what the body can tolerate by pushing it to extremes, and it's at those extremities that cycling becomes extremely cathartic in my experiencepain is temporary, the glory of beating your mates to the top of the hill lasts forever.....................

An Ultra Cycling event was held in Ireland last year.
The 'Race Around Ireland' was a 1350 mile lap of the Island taking in all the lamdmarks of Irish Cycling
It was won by Joe Barr who came out of retirement to raise funds for the NI Cancer Fund for Children.
The BBC made a programme about the race which is well worth a watch if you have half an hour to spare

They are currently planning this years race and I believe entries are being taken. This includes teams

I've seen that TWH, unfortunately I don't have the time this yearpain is temporary, the glory of beating your mates to the top of the hill lasts forever.....................

Amazing.
Saw a dosumentary on ITV4 about a Brit who entered the RAAM, at the end of the race he was wearing a home made neck brace to alleviate his pain. Epic race.0 -
I Love RAAM, try and keep up to date with it on the website each year, I just love the solo competitors, 3k in 8 days, love it! Totally insane.
Having said that I agree with with Rich I would jump at the chance to be part of a 4 man team, would be amazing.
Sir Steve Redgrave is having a bash at this year in an 8 man team
Glad Jure robic isn't part of the stats page, with an average of 28,000 miles a year even Will3 ITB and Running man would have to really extend the commute!FCN 8 mainly

My LBS are supporting a two man team in this year's RAAM, raising money for two charities. Shameless plug for a worthy cause:

Team SCR for RAAM 2011?
costs about $30,000 - $50,000 apparently to get a team of 8-10 people and quite a few support vehicles across the country  :shock:FCN 8 mainly

I don't understand what the M in RAAM stands for...
It's Race Across America, so surely it should be RAA?
And yes, the guy's a nutter. Impressive, but a nutter.0 -
I think they just wanted to shorten it something sheepy instead of RAA which sounds a bit laa de daaFCN 8 mainly
