Hi, I'm new to this site so not sure if I'm posting in the correct topic, I keep coming across Ebay auctions were people are selling bikes and posting how much each piece of equipment is to buy brand new, and how much the bikes retail price was.

I came across this bike advert:-
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/TREK-5-2-MADONE-5200-CARBON-FIBER-ROAD-RACE-BIKE_W0QQitemZ260587251608QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Bikes_GL?hash=item3cac35e798#ht_7704wt_1167

It must be at least 7-10 years old, and the groupset is probably obsolete.

What is your point? Are you suggesting that the advert is misleading?

What is not clear is how old the groupset is which as you state obsolete - the older Ultegra groupset is probably a match for a more modern 105.

Bike looks stunning and this is a classic frame from Trek using their 110 OCLV Carbon - lighter and stronger then the TCT found in the modern Madone 4 series. I believe the new 5.2 is 120 OCLV which is marginally heavier. New this bike would have been all of £2500 and i guess its up to the buyer what they feel its worth and prepared to bid up to.

I have the 5.9 110 OCLV with a completely new Ultegra SL groupset, New Bontrager race lite wheels and Bontrager 55 OCLV Boron Bars. Frame is the 2005 model originally purchased in 2007 with the aero seat tube. All the components are new and the previous owner has also fitted the carbon levers. I paid £1300 and more than happy with my bike. Just had it weighed and it comes in at 7.4kg. You can see it in the Your Bikes section.

I was watching a Madone 5200 a few weeks ago with older Dura Ace and was prepared to pay about £900 - it went for over £1400! So it was worth that to someone.

I still use some Ultegra kit from that era - it may be obsolete, but it's still quality kit and it's still perfectly usable...

Slight correction. The main frame on that bike is 120 OCLV with the forks 110 OCLV and that model was last was last handbuilt in the USA in 2005, in the 5000 series range, before they brought out the first Madone, with the fin on the downtube.

I have a 2005 frame, brought incidentally off eBay, hardly ridden in new/mint condition.

    More history here:-

However, agree with you it's a good bike and will be a better buy for £750-1000 in my opinion than one brought new at that price

That guy sells a few bikes on eBay and whilst many cyclists would accept that his method of listing RRP for each component price is a load of old twaddle, he achieves very good prices on his bikes (partly due to inexperienced bidders). I also believe that he adds good quality photographs which only serve to boost his prices further.

At the end of the day he is not forcing anybody to bid and it is up to the bidder to decide on what they think the true value of the bike is.

I stand rightly corrected - it is the 120 carbon frame on this bike. I also agree on the price bracket here and you would be getting a much better bike than those new for that price. I can't speak for the 5200 frame but my Madone rolls beautifully and is by far the best bike I have ridden.

    It looks really nice....well presented

maybe overpriced, but nice none the less. The Market will decide if it is worth it in the end.

Most probibly a better bike for the money than a new one for the same cash.
