Giant Defy 2 or Boardman?

I'm looking to get into road riding and have an idea on budget - Viva the Cycle to Work Scheme! The Defy 2 sits nicely in that bracket and has had some good reviews. But I see the Boardman range also gets a couple of mentions around the place (except the brakes may not be too great?). I've seen comparisons with the Trek 1.5 but wonder if anyone's able to offer comparisons on Giant -v- CB? :?: For what it's worth, 5'7", slim but slightly overweight (for now!), currently tootle round on a (t)rusty old mountain...
Someone gimme a push...!

Have been on a Defy 2.5 (tiagra groupset) for the past year.
My first road bike but I have had a great time on it. Have built up mileage over the past 6 months and now riding aobut 150 miles a week. It's a very good alu frame, it's responsive and I like the look of the DEFY range. Can't really fault it, although I'm now drooling over TCR's and CUBE bikes as the next step !

Boardman for me - but then I've got one. 8)
No problems with the brakes that a change of pads wont fix.
    Cycling weakly

I think you will find the consensus is they are both good bikes and the choice is down to nothing more than preferance either in comfort or looks. For what it is worth I have a Defy 2 and think it is great. I also have a Look 595 with full Dura Ace and when I get back on the Giant it still feels good.

I have been sat here contemplating exactly the same question, but also with the Defy 3 in the mix as it is a triple and I am a beginer.

My problem has been that I set off with a £250 budget and was looking on E bay. I thought that the bikes were making strong money so I set myself a budget of £500 which would get me a Defy 4. I then found this place and before I knew it I was considering whether or not to go for the carbon framed Boardman, I haven't even sat on a road bike since I discovered mountain bikes 20 years ago.

It just goes to show how dangerous internet forums can be for your wallet. Lucky for me I have a wife, 2 kids, a cat and 2 guinea pigs to support (and no overtime at work) to curb my spending ambitions.

    Exactly !

My advice would be buy the cheapest - ride it - and while your riding see if like the sport enough to justify a £1000 - £1500 bike.

£ for £, the Boardman will be lighter, I'd guess a couple of pounds and will be lower in the front than the Defy. Both good bikes though.
