..did my first 100mile cycle at the weekend....Peterborough100.....I was much fitter and more powerful than I expected to be - training was interrupted by an all inclusive hotel stay in Spain 2weeks ago! My furthest training ride was a hilly 33 miler - but it seemed to be enough to get me through..apart from a strange spell from 65 to 80miles when I had 'no engine'...suddenly got a second wind and charged to the finish....cheers to any of you I saw on the day.

you probably hit the wall. you feel funny as the body switches to burning fat, thats when you really start to loose weight.0

Well done. The break from training probably helped(it's got a fancy name if you read the training programmes can't remember it at the moment!)
I'm aiming to do my 1st 100 in September and was training towards 70-80 miles beforehand but perhaps I can downscale that-(do you mind me asking how old you are as that may be a factor?)0 -

Im sure its not THAT simple , if it were a matter of taking a break from training I would kick Contador's rear end all over France. Im better at taking breaks from training than anyone else in the World 8)
Edit; forgot to say well done on the ton Mothyman.0 -

Well done Mothyman. It's always a landmark/watershed when you achieve your first ton up.

thanks fellas.....timb64 asked how old I am....48years old, nearly 14stone at 5ft11in so still carrying too much weight. Most of my rides are short 13mile bursts, pushing hard up hills, so I haven't really practiced stamina. Conditions were perfect weather-wise though.
Got to spend a few weekends with the family and maybe I'll do another long one..
ps - I drank sips all the time and munched regular nuts with the odd banana and some jelly babies...seemed to work for me...0 -
i tried the ton at the weekend. i lost power at 93 miles and headed home feeling like i was going to fall off. A few minutes later i felt fine again and was re-energised , i could have carried on but settled for 93 miles. i will try agian soon and take some bananas. well done if it was your first attempt. will you try further next time.0

It is that simple. In 2 weeks you won't loose fitness but if you've not had a big rest for a while, 2 weeks could results in a good improvement. I remember when I had 2 weeks rest from doing long rides, I did a 37 miler and averaged nearly 20mph to my amazement. A massive improvement due to taking a rest.
On a ride I had a similar thing to the OP, at about 85 miles, I literally could not push, the group kept getting further and further than me into the distance, then about 95 miles in, I suddenly got power back and was motoring along on the flat for the last 20-25 miles nearly dropping them!
I dunno if it was related to me having 2 whole mars bars in one go though.0
