  • Me finks most people would recommend the Planet X Model B wheels. I have not got some, but I am tempted!! Although, you can't buy them singuarly, they are pretty cheap to buy as a set!!

shimano wh-r500 is tough and good quality, 54 quid http://www.fatbirds.co.uk/detail.asp/sku=WTWR074

ribble is doing front+rear for 68!

Cheers guys - I'm actually running a rear RS500 currently, and haven't been that impressed. I've pinged a hell of lot of spokes, it's gone crazily out of true, there's a lot of lateral movement and now the freehub's on its way out.

So, I'm reluctant to go down that route again, even if it is the best looking deal out there.

Currently stuck between a pair of RS10s for £90, Planet-X Model B's or C's for £100 or a rear Aksium for £90 (my Zonda front wheel is still going strong and perfectly in true).

    What do you reckon??

Just got the Planet X Model B's on my Allez 16 2010 bike.
Upgraded from the Alex S500 wheels.
They are very light for the money £99.99 at the mo and come with lightweight skewers and rim tape.
I upgraded my 8 spd block at the same time and have saved a huge chunk in weight.
Took them out last night on their maiden voyage (albeit a slow 8 miles with the GF in tow) and they were spot on.
Straight and true, good looking and saving you about 1/2lb in weight over the nearest Mavic/Shimano wheels.
They get bladed spokes too. 8)
    Well recommended IMO.

Handbuilts, why would you use anything else for commuting?

32 spokes so the wheel doesn't taco when you hit a pot-hole at 35 and ping a spoke, easy to find spares and relatively cheap.

The thing is, you're probably right... But I want whizzy aero spokes and 30mm rims

So, I took the plunge on the Model Bs today.

Thanks for all the advice guys - and one day, when I grow up a little, I'll definitely have a go at the hand-built route

Hand built is good but sometimes it's a case of 'bang for buck' and I think the Model B's should hold up well enough for you.

I just ordered myself some Ultralight clinchers (handbuilt) today via Wheelsmith and I can really appreciate why handbuilt wheels are well worth the money. 8)
