... just the iffy and inconsistent service from (some) Halfords.

Great bikes though and great value with decent kit for the money - just sold my Boardman Hybrid Pro as I stepped up to a road bike. Also worth looking at

The Trek is my personal favourite - just quality kit. Important your buddy gets to try some bikes out to see what feels right and meets expectations. Not forgetting providing the eye candy buzz! THese at least give you a starting point.

I'd look at Ribble & Planet X bikes. All the above choices are good.

    Kuota Kharma.

A sportive relaxed geometrey bike - but it looks like a racer. Suits me fine.

My LBS has just started stocking Kuota. Very nice and a lot of bike for the money.

Felt bikes are good too but you don't get the value you'd probably get with the others...but quality bikes nonetheless.
For £1500 he should get quite a good bike.
Carbon Frame/Forks Rival/105 drivetrain....but Ribble bikes are built to your own spec so you can chop and change things to your taste.

It may not be an option but 2nd hand bikes are a wise choice if you know what to look for.
I sold my Custom specced BMC Team Machine on here last year for £1450....cost me nearly double that and it was only about 10 months old. My loss and someones gain.
Very highly specced bike that was.
