Gear cables only lasting 3-4 months, snapping in same place

I have a Tiagra setup on my commuter, and the cable is snapping at the same place each time. This is just on the exit of the shifter. I have tried replacing the cable outer and also tried different type of cable ends, no help. So it must be something in the shift pod itself. The cable is always installed so it sits in its run, there are no visible obstructions or anything. My guess is that during some slower stickier shifts, the cable momentarily moves out of its roller groove in the pod and gets trapped in the gubbins, weakening it, but then gets pulled back in with the next shift (the shifting does tend to go a bit weird about 20 miles or so before a snap, probably due to cable stretching as it starts to fail.

Has anyone else had this problem with Tiagra (2007) or otherwise and what's the fix?

Yep, it's relatively common with Tiagra.

Unfortunately, the fix is a new shifter.

Be interested inwhere your experience is from - are you in the trade or just aware of lots of moaning from cycling buddies?
