Sometimes I do wonder about the BBC:

Let's all nostalgically imagine a world without penicillin whilst we are at it.....

    What rubbish.

    "Pilgrism would deliberately travel by foot"

    Bollox!
    Horses were really expensive, and people did rent them at the time for long journeys to save time/effort. Penniless monks on pilgrimage had no money to exchange for such services, but even they often borrowed or took animals with them to carry things like luggage or food.

    Try reading some contemporary accounts that talk of travelling monks, such as the annals of St Bertin/Fulda or many many others.
    "I hold it true, what'er befall;
    I feel it, when I sorrow most;
    'Tis better to have loved and lost;
    Than never to have loved at all."

    While we're at it we could have child labour back as well, the black death, other things which have thankfully passed, I started reading it and then stopped, don't these b*ggers have anything else to do.

    I liked it. Mind you, I've read his books 'The art of Travel' was good. I admit he waffles but he is a philosopher (literally)!

    Also 'slow travel' is the next big thing - trust me. Comes out of the slow food movement and slow towns / cities like Ludlow (no, not joking). Obviously global warming, for the believers, plays a big part in this. Not saying its right but it's happening - things are slowly down....

    "We would admire them like small boys do, and adults no longer dare, for fear of seeming uncynical and unvigilant towards their crimes against our world."

    I like that. I don't see any harm in indulging in a little romantic silliness.

    Pretty firmly tongue in cheek I would have said. Having said that it has been an absolute pleasure having no planes winging their way across Wimbledon these last 4 days.
