A mates asked me to change his Trek 5000 over to compact. Is it as simple as changing the chainring sizes? and chain length to suit.

    No.

Depending on what he currently has.... a compact runs 110mm BCD chainrings so can't be retro fitted to a standard double.

You need a comapct chainset, probably a slightly shorter chain, and drop the front mech a tad.
