Hi all
just bought a 2010 ex8 and put my v8's on it. I have been using an old pair of hitec hiking boots which are grand for winter but looking to buy new flat MTB specific shoes. Any recs? What are you using? And how do you find them?
Any help is appreciated....
if at first you dont succeed.....get off and push the bike!!!!

    a pair of the
Five Ten Impact 2 Low MTB Shoes
extremely popular but most reviewers say they are insanely grippy.
i use shimano am40 - sort of a poor mans five tens but loaded with all the best bits.
  • i just use regular DC shoes, they are super comfey, about £45 or £50, look alright, and ive got them with V8s and they seems to grip fairly well

I've had a pair of Shimano AM40 for the past 7-8 months wearing them daily and they are still great condition. Great support, grip and protection. Would definately suggest these

I have five ten Karvers BUT this is the last time I am posting this as it can EASILY be found by searching just like Charge Spoon for saddle.
  • cheap skate shoes (tk maxx etc etc).

something with a hard sole and ankle support.

I got my etnies online for £20 and theyre perfect.

Yup. Same answers every time. Yes you can go back from 5 10s, I'm living proof. Extra grip is nice but not actually neccesary, if you find your feet constantly slipping with a sensible skate shoe (Vans) then either you're riding very hard or you're doing it wrong.

5 10s annoyed me with their poor build quality. Cardboard insole, and then the sticky layer started to delaminate from the the main sole and rip up. But still, they do the job for as long as they last (my old Vans were worn out after a few years of general use before I started riding in them, since then they've been used more than the 5 10s and treated worse yet they're still in better shape than the brand new 5 10s I got) But they do stick.

Just got some AM40s. Like them so far, the choice of sole stiffness is probably a little gimmicky but they seem well put together and they grip just as well as 5 10s, they're a bit funny looking but nicer off the bike and they seem better weather-wise, nothing soaks up and holds water like a 5 10!

That's the review I was looking for. Cheers Northwind.

I'm currently using Hi-tec hiking shoes which are a tad too stiff (But grippy and waterproof). Will treat myself to some Shimanos for Morzine I think.

Course, it's entirely possible that in a year I'll be slating these ones for falling apart too  But they do seem decently put toghether. I think any rider would be very happy with any of the 5 10s or with the AM40s tbh.

Does anyone else find 5 10s heavy compared to every other shoe?

    No I don't find 5.10's heavy

BTW Northwind, just remembered that the freeriders and basic's have a tendancy to let mud in between the sole and shoe so that is probably what happened to them, we have ridden in some pretty bad weather recently after all.

So basically if you do get 5.10's (my personal choice) and ride in muddy conditions, stay away from the freeriders and basic's. Imopacts are great though and I have heard good things about the Karver

There's no mud between the sole and the shoe. It's coming apart around the ball of the foot, not at the edges, which I assume just means the 2 parts of the sole aren't very well stuck together.

Ah, but I missed a chance yesterday, I could've just blamed the new shoes for me being so erratic on the trails "Yeah, I was having a great day, just need to get used to these shoes, they totally slowed me down!"

Yeah, it can happen there as well. Started happening to Erin's but she just superglued it back together and it has been fine since (this is on freeriders)

I will let you off for yesterday since your @rse has only just healed :lol:

But I am quicker than you.................at some points
  • Five Tens are good. Bit heavy but protect the feet nicely, just dont get them wet or your feet will weight an extra kilo. They can also be factory resoled.

I would have been interested in trying the shimano flats but they seem as expensive as Five tens now.

Another vote for the AM40. Used em on some really tough trails and my feet stay on the pedals. Very comfy, go bigger than your usual size though. added bonus, they dont look like an orthapedic shoe :) Down side is the colour, although they dont stay white for long :)
