XT shifters of rapid rise Rear mech wrong way round

I don't understand how this insane phenomina passed me by without me ever knowing. I've recently built a bike and took it out on its first test spin and soon realised that the finger and thumb shift on my shifters cause the mech to do opposite things. so finger shift goes into an easier gear and thumb into harder gear.

I have XT shifters and XT rear mech (rapid rise I think

What I want to know is - A) is it the shifters or the rear mech which is actually doing this and B) is there anything I can do to change them back to the 'normal' way

Mech not levers dictate direction of operation.

Rapidrise or low normal, means the spring always wants to return the mech to the low gear postion (large cogs).Normal mech is top normal,ie:mech is sprung towards the high gears (small cogs)

Put up an ad on classifieds to do a swap for someone with a top normal.

I have dual control shifters with rapid rise.Levers work the same on both sides. :)
