Newbie tube size question

Help !
new to two wheels, I want to change an innertube this weekend for the first time ever
(1) can anybody point me in the direction of a useful video lesson on what I need to know - I've never taken a back wheel off either !
(2) We have 2 bikes, his'n'hers of the same make that we bought a couple of years ago - all 4 tubes had Schrader valves. Both bikes have had tubes replaced by bike shops, one had a tube with a Schrader valve, one with a Presta, so we have three schrader and 1 presta. I'd like to replace the presta with a schrader, so I went back to the shop we bought the bikes from (yep, it was Halfords) and they said the only tubes they supply to fit my tyres have Presta valves (yet they came with Schrader, and the current display models are fitted with Schrader)
The tyres say 40-622 700x38c, whatever that means. What size innertube do I need, and is it worth getting these self-sealing ones

Have a look at Park Tools website for workshop info.
You need a 700c inner tube - the second figure is usually a range on tubes, so make sure your 38 falls into it (though you can get away with slightly smaller)
