tightening up bottom bracket/wiggly cranks

Need some tips on how to tighten up my bottom bracket (at least I think that's the cause of the problem).

Currently if I hold the pedal in one hand and shake it there is noticeable wiggling of the whole crank.

Anyone got any bright ideas on how to put an end to this?

  • Is it just on one side or do both cranks move when you do this?

If it's just on one side then the crank is probably loose. There should be a bolt or cap head screw which holds the crank to the axle. You will need to tighten that up (assuming you have a square taper bottom bracket)

If the whole thing moves then the bearings in the bottom bracket are worn out and you need to replace it.

sounds like the BB has gone or something is lose. Depends on the crank/BB system used.

lots of info on all systems on Parktools.
