Speedplay Pedals

Looking to buy some new pedals and am steering torwards the Speedplays, however just got a little confused as saw models Zero, Light and X2 which are all roughly the same price, can anyone explain what the difference is as to a simpleton like me they look the same.

Also where is the best place to buy them from, online retailer if possible ???

But unfortunately I went for the new Keo Blades, much better than the speedplays.

I think the X2 is an old model, go for the Zero Model.

I think it means that unlike the zero's I have which you can adjust the amount of float I have on each foot. With the X they don't have that facility. Though I could be wrong :?

the X have unlimited float - eg your foot can twis/rotatet a long way either way, and the Zero's have a fixed amount of float (rotation).

I have the X and love them. No knee issues and simple to clip in and out.

The Zeros have an adjustable range of float, from 0 to 15° IIRC. They are good.

My LBS advised me not to buy the speedplay because they are a strain on the foot, where as the keo blades have a wider platform.

Obviously they don't sell them then ? Take a look at the Speedplay wesite, the platform is the cleat not the pedal. They have a bigger platform than other pedals.

Yes they do sell Speedplay..... I'm happy with my Keo Blades, weighed lighter than the Zero Titanium and the stability / platform is better in my opinion.

I'm also looking at getting some speedplays. I figured they would be a good pedal as I currently run MTB SPDs. However, I'm tempted by the iClics but I may have just been swayed to the SPs again.

Are they difficult to adjust / does it take a while to get them set right? Given you have a great range of float to choose from?!

Or is it a bolt on and clip in kind of job.

I have knackered knees and got the Speedplay X's because of the unlimited float. They work really well for me and I don't find them uncomfortable underfoot.

(To prove I'm not partisan - I then got the Speedplay Frogs for the MTB, and found them completely useless).

BTW Ribble is cheap for these. I'm waiting for the white Zero stainless.

OK, so I'm pretty new to cycling but I plumped for some speedplays and to be honest didn't really know the difference.

In my opinion, your choice is between the X5 / X2 / Zero's (wouldn't bother with light action tbh, unless you want to advertise your a girl).

With the X series, the lower the number, the better the pedal. They all have free float, basically as previously said, your heel can rotate to a specified degree, so you knees can flex and have more rotation when cycling (which is a massive bonus as pedals with no float effectively manipulate your knees to work in a fixed movement). Google 'float' and it will give you a better understanding.

The Zero's are adjustable so you can choose how much float you feel comfortable with.

You have three different types of material, chrome-moly / stainless / titanium. Personally I went with the X2.
On reflection I would have got the Zero's because you can adjust them and I don't need all the float that X2's provide (however I have no problem with them).

My advice to you would be to get the Zero's unless you have chronic knee problems.

P.S. My other mates who are newish to cycling got Look Keo and some other type. They all wish they had got Speedplays now, not only because they look bad ass, but they are so easy to clip in at traffic lights / roundabouts.

speedplay have a lower stack height which can only be good.

I don't know what the faff with the float is... I get loads of float with my times, if I wanted too. Same with my old Shimanos, choose the right cleat and voila.

I also think it would be difficult for any cleat to beat the iclics in terms of ease of getting in.
