First Bike (£450 budget) GT Avalanche 2.0?

First post here! Want to get a bike to cycle to uni as well as riding on light trails at some point down the line. Basically, I don't know much about bikes and for that reason I'm hesitant about purchasing a bike from Halfords as I'm not sure how to set up a bike properly e.t.c (although I've great reviews for Carrera bikes).
I'm at Bristol uni atm so was thinking buying the bike from Evans Cycles. I've narrowed it down to:

GT avalanche 2.0 2009 £399

or the GT avalanche 2.0 2010 £569.99 (can price match price to get it for £450)

Is there much difference between the two bikes and is it worth getting the 2010 model for an extra £50?

Also are there any other bikes you can recommended?

Halfords ain't that bad mate...when you pick it up just ride it round the car park check every gear and if there is a problem then take it back in and they will sort it.

...and it's your lucky day as the Carrera Fury which is better than both the bikes you've posted is currently on offer if you order on-line for in store pick up at £430.

or you can have the Kraken, which is comparable to the GT avalanche 2.0 for £340...Bargain. I have one and love it.

If you can manage another £50 go for the 2009 Avalnache 1.0 which will give you better components and 9 speed.
