So it was that on Tuesday evening, I strapped my time trial bike (otherwise known as my Audax bike) on to the back of the car. I drove down to the course, got my number and waited in the queue.
My mate had gone off at number 3, I was number 11. My time came, the starter counted me down and then, go! I went flying off down the road, riding, so I thought, faster than anybody had ever riden. I was bought back to earth by being overtaken inside two miles.
Five miles down the road, halfway. Turn at the island then blast back to the finish. The theory sounded good but I hadn't reckoned with the wind, it just hit you. Riding uphill into the wind made that as hard a five miles as I think I have ever riden.
But I got there. My time, 37.25, I suppose not too bad for an old, fat bloke on a touring bike! And, in a strange sort of way, and despite it being really hard, I enjoyed it.
Two weeks to the next one. Not much time for training but now I have a time to beat.
