  • i have to admit, i bought 2 high roller 2.35s for the sole reason that they have dice on them :D however they have worked out brilliantly, ive taken em everywhere that i can get to, so road, thetford blacktrail, mucking around in my local forest, hard surface xc ride :) they seem to work out pretty yummy

Not many panaracers mentioned thus far. Before I bought my Cube, my GT aggressor had Panaracer Fires. Thought they were pretty good

I like bontrager tyres - the tlr ones go on tubeless with a trackpump, mud x for winter. Just ordered the new xr4 for summer

Schwalbe Nobby Nics front and rear ,most of the year, with occasional use,of Racing Ralph on the back when its drier.

Real mixture of road, gravel, clay, loose, but the Nobby Nics just work most of the time.Ideal compromise between grip and rolling speed for me.

Maxxis Ardents front and back. Not sure I'll be buying a new set. They seem to wear quick though that doesn't bother me. Plenty grip and fast rolling but I'll probably try something new. Only ever had a puncture with them on the road.

Spesh Fast Trak LK came on the bike. Utter crap if you even think about the wet. Clearly designed for some very dry rocky place that I've never been.

the Kenda range are all good!
On my Roscoe i have found the nevengals (or whatever there called on the front mounted backwards) and the small block eight on the back at a slightly lowwer pressure than usual. this is for all-round riding in hertfordshire.

In the conditions we've had lately (very dry, dusty) on hardpack, grass and rock, I'm really liking Panaracer Razer MXs. I run the 2.3" ones, which are only about 2.1" in reality. Only great because the conditions suit them.

Got a pile of Nevegals in the garage so I have to use those til they run out  Just as well they're so good really. I love Small Blocks for the summer and I'm liking these Rubber Queens for their silly grip but my default option's nevegals, they can do everything pretty well and some stuff very well.

I've just fitted Maxxis Ignitor 2.35's front & rear.

Great at Llandegla. Much improved over my previous Specialised Enduro's.

However, at Whinlatter last weekend I found them slipping a lot on the damp Lakeland rock and loose shaley stuff. First time I've ridden in these conditions - is this normal, or are the Ignitors not best suited to Whinlatter?

I found them not suited to Whinlatter, I used to use a Ignitor rear, HR rear, had to remove them as they were lethal! 2.2 MK Protections work well for me at Whinlatter and are my Tyre of choice for now
  • I've been keeping track of the tyres that I've been using and writing a few words on them, you can see here if you want:

    BasqueMTB Tyre Combinations 1
    BasqueMTB Tyre Combinations 2

    Summary:
DH days I'm using 2.5 UST Supertacky Highrollers.
For more general riding I'm using 2.5 Minion Supertacky singleply up front (tubeless) and 2.35 Advantage 60a out back. The Minion copes well with the range of conditions from dust to mud.

On the Kona HT I love the Panaracer FireXC 2.1 tyres, a good all rounder
The Felt FS came with Maxxis Ignitors and I was not very impressed with them in damp or dry conditions, the front was forever washing out on me and were horrific in mud.
I now run Panaracer Rampage 2.35 for general all round use, they do the job quite well.
For thick mud, Specialized Captains 2.0 are the trump card

having said that my all-time favourite tyre choice would be a toss-up between the original panaracer smoke & dart combo or spesh evil twins

i think the evil twins just edge it - not that fast rolling but grippy in just about all conditions in my experience

Thanks, thats great everyone, im slightly closer to deciding now, but im sure this thread should be very useful for anyone looking for new tyres.
    Great work guys!
  • I think the Panaracer Rampage have only had one mention.....so I'll give them another!

Running a 2.35 Rampage up front with a 2.1 Fire XC on the rear for the moment. Thinking of trying another Rampage on the rear.

Had 2.35 High Rollers, great tyres but slow and heavy especially on an already heavy Meta 5.5!

Well, same here I can never decide, but I have Maxxis ignitor ATM they were just a cheap quick fit for now. But nexy tyres I get, I have decided to get maxxis aspen, they are light, but I'm not so sure about the grip, and they are a good price, so I hope I like them when I get around to buying them

I had Ignitors on my Felt Compulsion from new and thought they were a good all-rounder. Bought Minions for Morzine last year and kept them on since - heavy, but super tough.
Will buy two more (2.5, dual-ply), just before Morzine, this June, for what it's worth.......
