Hi there,

Brand new to road cycling, just got a bike and the gear (previously did a bit of mountain biking), been out a few times and absolutely loving it, but would love to ride with someone who knows what they're doing and to get some sound advice and tutoring... Hope you can help!!!! :-)

Many, many thanks...

Holme Valley Wheelers look like they start their club runs from New Mill, which isn't too far away?

I live in Emley and could go for a spin at some point (not for a couple of weeks though as I have loads on and I am not sure you woudl learn much useful from me!). I noticed in my local pub, the Whitte Horse, that there is gang that runs out of there on most Saturday mornings too, although they seem to be talking about 30 milers inc coffee stop so not very hardcore!
  • That would be wicked.... thanks so much... I'll try and keep up!
  • Hey Chris, Thanks too.... I'm actually based at Clayton West, not sure if i could get up that hill yet! lol... but if you fancy meeting on the denby dale road for a spin sometime that would be wicked! Thanks so much... and I'll look into that Saturday morning ride too!

(ps... any useful tips would be fantastic... after riding a mountain bike, this is so weird, yet fantastic at the same time!)

    Andrew.

I work in Clayton West! I am sure we could go for a ride at some point, I'll bookmark this and get in touch when I am free (off on holiday then with work)
  • OK, that's cool. So am i right in thinking you just roll down the hill to work?? lol. I work in Leeds so I have to battle the traffic :-( ...

Another good reason to get on my bike whenever i can!

Pontefract here. I'm no pro or well-seasoned Cat 1, but I'd be happy to meet you half way for a ride. What sort of advice are you after?

    Ben

PS. Have a stab at the road up to Emley Moor mast - the views are a reward in themselves!

  • Hey Ben,

Thanks for the message, I know it might sound a bit dumb but never done road riding before.... and it's not as easy as it may seem.... I'm looking for someone who can advise when to go into which gears, best riding position for when, general stuff.

I've wanted to get into it for ages, but never had enough spare cash, finally..... Hallelujah!

Anyway, thought it might be good to get some friendly riding advice to start with so i'm not flayling around for months to come and getting into bad habits without realising. Also need someone to ride with me to push me so i actually do get up that scarily steep slope to the mast.... know what i mean...?

Thanks for the reply again.... and yes, It would be great to meet half way (I do believe it's flatter over there!)

    Speak soon,
    Andrew

    Andrew.

Firstly, yes it's a lot flatter over here and hence boring at times. Although the headwinds are a nice challenge and it's great for pace rides.

As it happens this weekend and I'm pretty chocker helping a mate move house, but any other weekend (weekdays will be tricky with light for the moment) I'll be on it. If you fancy meeting up on a Saturday morning just let me know. I don't know where to suggest as a meeting point really but that's a very minor detail I suppose!

Anyway, PM me if you're keen and we'll sort something.

    Ben

  • Message sent!
  • I'm with the Huddersfield Star Wheelers and we usually have 2 groups go out on a Sunday Club run from St Georges Square in Huddersfield (steadier and faster paced group). Also our Tuesday night Ride starts this Tuesday from Lockwood which is an easy paced ride. We have had new riders join recently so don't feel intimidated by joining us: non-one gets left behind. We have a fast paced Thursday Night ride as well from Honley.

http://www.starwheelers.com for more details. The forum has the up to date stuff about ride times /meets etc.
  • Sounds great to me... I'm a real beginner so I'm going to work on it for a few weeks i think, need to build my confidence up before being in a bigger group, but really appreciate the offer and will definately see you soon. The group looks great, and I really appreciate the fact that you wouldn't leave me behind!!!

Thank you so much for the message!! :D

    Andrew and others

I am returning to road bikes after a layoff of too many years, so it is back to square one for me.

Bought a bike at the end of last year and have done a couple of rides so far, when I can fit them in, and have suffered the hills around Leeds and the winds of Pontefract (sounds like something you would see your Doc for).

Would be up for joining in on some rides out with others.

    Cheers

  • Hey Pavs,

That would be excellent, don’t hesitate to pvt msg me, and we’ll arrange date and time… I’m happy to drive out of the valley… need to try somewhere a bit flatter, although you’re welcome to come this way too!

    Andrew.
  • Hey Guys, thought i'd keep you up to date on progress, went out for my first circuit today, found a great route too, from Clayton West, through Denby Dale, across to Cawthorne, Kexborough, Sculpture Park, West Bretton, and back here, not long but lovely countryside and quiet roads.... really starting to see how this is addictive... each time just gonna add a little bit more and see what happens... you're welcome to join me anytime!

Hey Andrew, I came through Clayton West on Saturday and past quite a few cyclists, not sure if they were from around that area tho.
Nice area around Emley, Shelley & Denby Dale. Always up that area at the weekend depending on the weather.

Need to get organised, i managed to sneak out for an hour on Saturday morning while the car was being sorted, Yorkshire Sculpture Park was on my route as well!!!

Would make sense to organise getting out as a group some time......

    Cheers

This 'bump' by Chris reminded me - sorry I've been slack and absent minded of late - we still need to organise a West Yorkshire run.
