Clipless, absolutely. And good shoes. I've been very happy with Speedplay Zero stainless.
Nothing beats that new bike smell...0 -
Clipless for sure - what a diference it makes and you get used to them in no time. Makes the bike feel part of you!
I went with Look KEO 2 max and love them. Easy clip in, easy twist out. Wggle do a carbon soled road shoe on their dhb brand for about £85 which are very good and a non carbon sole version for under £50. If you have cash to splash then I'd recommend SIDI or Gaerne Myst shoes.Trek Madone 5.9

go clipless. time rxs here, i only fell off twice (despite years of spd practice) in the first couple of weeks (oops) and then only when distracted by poon and or other fast moving things. hill starts still dont look clever but i have a day job so kiss my knees.0

Go clipless - but get used to clipping in and out leaning against a wall or post or similar while stationery. Then try on quiet back roads where you are not going to encounter things like traffic queues, traffic lights or give way signs. If you do come to somewhere where you may have to stop, such as a T junction, anticipate having to stop and prepare to unclip before you get to the junction. As you get more confident you will be able to do this later and later.0
