How long should cycling shoes last?

Have a 2 year old pair of Sidi shoes, full carbon sole.

Looking to replace a few bits on them (buckle, heels etc), but wondering how long they'd
be expected to last. Probably done 10,000km.

I'm guessing they're not like trainers which you're meant to replace quite regular.

the linings tend to be the weak point in most cycling shoes, IME...and also the fastenings, if they are ratchet or ratchet/wire. The soles should effectively last forever..

I just replaced my old (3 years) Spec BG elites because a big hole opened up in the heel lining...

A lot longer than 2 years but depends on how well you have looked after them and how much walking you've done in them.

I've got an 8-9 year old pair of Sidi Energys and havn't replaced anything on them.

Saving my Sidi Ergo2 carbon for sunny days.

My Sidi Energy 2's are going strong and they're about 9 years old. Sure they look it, but they are as up to the task as they ever were.
  • When you think about it, cycling shoes tend to have very little contact with the ground (unless you walk in them...or crash) and so should last a very long time. Mine have been going 10 years and they are only just now starting to look tatty.

As others have said, the clip/buckle/ratchet is normally the thing to wear down.

You'd be surprised how much walking some cyclists do in them watching a cycle race at the road side and walking about in cafes. Pushing their bikes up hills in Sportifs.

My Time Racing (Grey and Red version of the recognisable White and Red) have just had their 21st birthday!!!

OK the straps have freyed a bit and they look a bit dated but they are still stiff and comfortable. In fact I am wearing them on my commute today.
