Looking for a ride in the Lake District for this Friday. Planning on stopping to do it on the way up to Glentress from Birmingham so don't want an all dayer! Anyone got any suggestions with links to maps / directions? Ideally around 15 miles and close to the M6. Cheers!

Turn off M6 for Kendal and head to Staveley.

Wheelbase have pre printed maps of the Kentmere area for a couple of pounds and is a very good ride. You could probably manage the Garburn Pass.

the borrowdale bash starting in keswick is a true classic and good fun. some techy descents but also a fair bit of smooth riding so it doesn't take ages. on a friday, you'll also escape the tourist hordes that can take over bits of the trail on summer weekends
here's a route description/map:

alternatively, you could try the skiddaw house loop (also from keswick), route 7 on this page. route is easy to trace on the free map thumbnail they've got on there

man-made trails at whinlatter are only 15 mins away from keswick, so you could give that a go too but personally i prefer the natural trails in this area0 -
Cheers for the ideas guys!0
