hi been toying with the idea of drilling out my crossride rims(the internal box section not externally) to try and save a bit of rotational weight......has anyone done this, we used to have drilled rims when i used to ride trials......

i would say its a bad idea. that material is there for a reason. likely to make it very flexy and weak. but its your rim not mine, do it if you wantI like bikes and stuff0

+1
also, unless you did it very accuratley, it would make the wheel unevenly weighted, and would end up slower0 -

Want to go faster? Go tubeless.0

round file will be fine..many of my friends did,,even on a DT Swiss wheelset..
and they're fine..0 -

What Josh said,
If you want lighter buy lighter rims.0 -

Yeah but then you have less rolling resistance, increased grip, and the time saved from not stopping to fix punctures..0 -
If you remove material from any part of your bike you will invalidity your warranty and also put yourself at risk of a catastrophic failure. If you want lighter wheels it will mean spending money no other way.

Or...
Instead of heavy, heavy air, inflate you tyres with helium..
And you will fly down the trails..0 -
Wait.. Helium is quite flammable isn't it.. And rotors get very very hot.. Then if you puncture, not only will everyone talk in silly voices, but your bike might explode.

AWESOME.
Nope that is Hydrogen.
Helium is inert."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

What's that stuff that explodes in balloons?
These sort of balloons..

Propane."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

You learn something new every day..
So, propane in the tyres anyone?0 -
Plus you can do the squeeky voice thing if you get a puncture0

no."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

RealMan: Time to go back for GCSE science I reckon
And to the OP, don't drill holes in your rims, it's not a good idea. Use lighter tyres.
Agree with bigbenj, the weight saving (if there is one) from tubeless will be minimal, the only reason you'll be faster with tubeless is because you're not stopping to mend punctures.0 -
Yeah but then you have less rolling resistance, increased grip
Not necessarily. And you can still puncture.0 -

You can still get hit by lightening too..0 -

They just have hot air....you might be thinking of the wartime zepplins which where fillled with Hydrogen..not helium:

Hot air in them ones!0 -
Pfft Hydrogen is perfectly safe, its when you mix it with oygen you get a problem
Most large HV generators are filled with the stuff as coolant

If everyone thought like this the wheel would never have been invented. Let the man be creative!*
I remember having factory drilled rims on a BMX, long time ago. I'm sure the rims were built with this in mind before they drilled the holes though...
