Carrying stuff...

What is the general consensus for carrying stuff on a 100km ride? I'd like to take water / energy drink, some food, spare tube + Co2, some food. do I need my Park tools multitool? can I get away with bunging this lot in a saddle bag / do I need a camelbak?
Probably the food is the biggest consideration.

are you solo or with a group?
If your grouped up you can get away with carrying less, but if its a solo venture, take whatever you can carry just in case!!0 -
Water/energy drink in bottle cages. Pump on frame. Tools etc in saddlebag. Food / gels in jersey pockets with a packable rain jacket.
...sounds like you may need a jersey?Cycling weakly0 -
Spare tube & tyre leavers in saddlebag, bottle in cage, mobile phone, gillet/jacket and food in jersey pockets.
Wouldn't take much food or water for 100km, one bottle that I can refill somewhere with a tap and a banana or a flapjack would do me.0 -
I use a streamlined Camelbak with 1.5 litres of water and one bottle on the frame with energy drink.
Food, flapjacks, Bannana and two small pork pies
I find a big bag of Skittles gives a sugar rush to get up the hills and to the endRichard

for group rides I dont carry much... well except for energy drink then I still carry loads (im a thirsty boy and loose lots to sweat!). Tyre levers, spare long valve tube, co2 catridges and multi tool
For a solo ride, I fling on my camel bak, dont actually usually have water in it... but have a pump in it, chain braker, extra tubes, scabs/super patches, power link , multi tool, spare folding tyre (only becase ive had a blow out in the past, destroyed the tyre and its caused me to have to phone the lady to pick me up! oh that cost me, a dinner out at a thai restaurant!) and a few other useful bits and bobs.
May sound alot, but if im going out to train on my own I have no intention of having to phone for a lift, especially if im using the bike instead of the car, e.g. cycling from my local town to cardiff (just udner 60 miles) to see some friends.
Execise for some, but would prefer to get to my destination. Without a chain braker and spare tyre I wouldnt of on two occasions. Well okay one occasion, and I had to phone for a lift on the second
Cheers

2x750ml bottles with energy drink.
Seat bag with 1/2 inners, multi=tool, park tool patches, tyre levers, phone, driving licence, cash and bank card, spare power link.
Pump on frame.
Ipod in one of back pockets, energy gel, 2 x flapjack and piece of fruit in another, waterproof in 3rd.
If doing 100m unsupported, will stop for a coffee and a pastry around 50m just to break it up and have a stretch.http://www.georgesfoundation.org

I think the same, but I wouldn't know how to use one even if I did0 -

In an emergency you'd work it out pretty quickly
I always carry a quick link or two.0 -
I carry anything that could cause me damage if I were to come off, such as multi tool, tyre levers, tubes and pump in my saddle pack and softer items in my jersey pocket.
By leaving them in my saddle pack attached to the bike I never forget the critical items when going for a ride - I'm quite forgetful.0 -

Wow! I'm lucky if I drink that over 30 miles. I do tend to make sure I'm well hydrated pre and post ride though. I struggle to drink on shorter rides for some reason.Bianchi. There are no alternatives only compromises!

I've been riding bikes all my life, mountain bikes since '88 and road bikes for a couple of years, I can honestly say that I've never had a chain break. That said, I did stuff my mtb a few years ago, wrecking the rear mech, so I had to shorten the chain and ride single speed.
I've got a small Park chain tool that, simply due to paranoia, I may take with me on a long haul, but I've never needed one yet.
Unless you're planning a mech smashing crash, or are going to break into a NapD style, chain mashing demonstration of Quad Power (see other NapD posts), I'd say that you can get away without a chain tool.
Ask yourself, when was the last time you had a chain issue ?Science adjusts it’s beliefs based on what’s observed.

I use the little 1.5L Camelbak instead of bottles, it's a runner's pack I think. I find it's more convenient than a bottle and gives you an extra (small) pocket for keys, iPod etc.Science adjusts it’s beliefs based on what’s observed.
