Specialized BG Sport or Comp are very good, from my own and friend`s experience.
Shimano are good but can be a bit narrow for some.
Northwave Raptor and Lake also good, but fit is crucial so no way of knowing till you go try some!

Specialized Tahoe MTB shoe, they are really comfortable, good if you have to walk, and they look nice as well.. and with a price tag of about 60 quid you can't go wrong with them. I've had mine for about a year, use them at least once a week and a few weekends away and they still look like new.

I've got a pair of North Wave shoes which are really good as they have a flexible sole for walking as well. Also have a pair of Specialized (BG Comp I think?) but they have a more rigid sole.

If you're after spd shoes then another vote here for Specialized BG Sport

mp66 are great, if a bit heavy, but they aren't waterproof- they're got a couple of mesh panels on top that let the water in. In all fairness they aren't big, but I'd still class them as 'splash-' rather than 'water-' proof though. Add a pair of good waterproof socks however, and you've got a combo that's lasted me through all the snow this winter for a lot less than the price of a gortex set.

I have a set of race shoes which compliment them nicely- if I was going to have just one pair I'd be inclined towards something a little more trail-y

    hope that helps

I still swear my my M086's, I guess they aren't always ideal on the trails but you can walk in the easily, but retaining a good level of stiffness too :)
