I have not been biking in years! (buying advice)

And now I'm going to start commuting. I need a load of stuff to get my bike ridable, but I don't want to throw loads of money at it.

I need...

New brakes
A new cassette
A new chain
2 X Inner tubes
2 X tyres

So, will this all do or is any of it dogsh*t?

For the chain cassette I'll just get any cheap Shimano/SRAM crap.

What tyres? It'll be all road, so I want more road going mountain bike tyres.

    Will do fine if you have the right mounts and wheels for V brakes.

    Make sure the drivetrain parts match for speed.

    What bike are you upgrading? Make and model, and approx year would be useful. Maybe pictures if you can.

    Tyrewise, Continental Gatorskins are my choice of commuting tyre, mainly for p*ture protection and a pretty grippy and smooth ride: http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/cycle/7/Conti ... 360021704/ No good offroad, but it sounds like that would be OK.
