Rights of Way Mottram Hyde Stalybridge
anybody help or familiar with this area
We were out today on a familiar loop when stopped on Hobson Moor Road, off Mottram Rise near Stalybridge heading towards Lower Swineshaw reservoir , we were approaching Ash Tree farm where a 4WD was blocking our way and a woman standing in front of access gate explaining that there were no cycles allowed as it was a private road. However Walkers were clearly using the route and vehicle access was evident as it was being used to access local farms. We explained that we would walk the cycles until we reached the bridle way, she was having none of it being quite rude and all. To avoid any further agro,as I was with the wife, and I knew of another route we retreated.
I was however displeased at doing so and since been trying to establish whether this is a legal right of way and the law re pushing a cycle along a public footpath.
Had a look at Tamesides definitive map online and its marked as a footpath.Another map shows as a white undefined road with "TRACK" in brackets
please is anyone familiar with route and understand law.

I'm just looking on an OS 1:25000 scale map and can't find the farm but the Pennine Bridleway runs through that area and over what looks like a dam wall on the higher Reservoir, that is legal to cycle. There are other tracks marked as FPs and if you were on one of these AND the woman was the landowner then she could technical stop you. However she would have to prove she was the land owner and that you were on a FP.Some farmers turn a blind eye, some don't mind you crossing their land if you walk with the bikes and SOME actually chain up gates/stiles etc on public rights of way.0
