Bottom bracket compatability. Square taper to hollowtech?

Hi all,
Today's stupid question. If you have an old style square taper bottom bracket and cranks, can you upgrade to some like a hollowtech or octalink setup? Is the basic design of the bottom bracket shell on bike the same?
My brother has an old 99 Rockhopper and wants to change his chainset, is he restricted to square taper type setups?
Cheers

Of course, when changing the BB type, you need to change the cranks.

Come and see me at https://www.facebook.com/biketyke/
I would source a new or used Deore square taper crank (or octalink at a push) with replaceable rings and when they wear our get some decent rings, Middleburn, Raceface etc. This with a UN54 bottom bracket would suit the bike better.
Not sure if this the same as your talking about, but Merlin have got this one for £50

Good choice!
I'd ignore plugp7 tbh, I don't see how a chainset can 'suit' a bike. It's a sensible replacement.

Square taper/internal BBs last for ages.
