So great bikes on the internet dont count and nor do Boardman bikes from Halfords. There are the obvious suggestions ie: Specialised Secteur, Trek 2.1 or Cannondale Caad 9, but are there any more I can take into consideration?

I know it is asking alot, but I would like a bit of carbon and a 105 groupset if possible.

I ended up opting for the Trek2.3 It is slightly over the £1k mark but I wanted the full 105 groupset and I prefered the white to the black of the 2.1 too.

Many will say the CAAD9 with Tiagra groupset for its excellent frame. Myself I opted for a bike with the better groupset.

There are plenty of bikes out there at the £1k mark and all are going to be good entry level bikes from what I've read on here. Just pick which you like the look of and which is most comfortable to ride.

Better have a look at Ribble then-carbon frame with 105 from £1069.
  • Planet X SL Pro Carbon with SRAM Rival for £999.

Did anyone else (other than Paul) actually read the OP?

You're expecting to much from LBS imo....

CAAD9 won the Giro D'italia not too many years ago (nothing to do with the rider of course  )

I'd get that, you get some carbon by way of forks, i ride an old Cannondale CAAD2 and there is nothing carbon on there, ignore the people who say 'ally will rattle your bones'. Basically it's over exagerated b0llox, granted my carbon bike is noticably less....erm...vibraty?lol, but not exactly night and day.

Anyhoo, what kind of riding are you hoping to do? What's your fitness like? Had a road bike before?
  • I did read original poster comments - but I don't understand why Planet X wouldn't apply as they do take cyclescheme ....

Depends on the 'Cyclescheme'. There are different ones. Ride to work, Cyclescheme etc etc, not all are taken at P-X :)

PS, other than that, great selection, must be light as a feather 8)

    My employers go through Wheelies.
The limit is £999.99 so even if I wanted a £1001 bike and offered to pay the £1 I wouldn't be able to.
Therefore my choice was limited to the CAAD9.
I did look at a few alternatives.

Scotts Speedster S30 is a 20.09lb machine (0.59lb heavier than the CAAD9 but £799. Which would mean I could spend £200 on more clothing....which seems nice.

The Scott has delays like the CAAD9 though....June availablility. :(
Genesis Equlibrium seems quite nice but still a bit of a hefty machine.

In two minds as to cancel my CTW order or not. Could ideally do with saving the extra £££ each month instead.
