Kona fire mountain deluxe '09 upgrades

Got it as my first "proper" bike this christmas and thinking about the viability of upgrading some things sometime in the future.

If I continue to cycle more I'll probably get some spd pedals (probably either shimano dx m647 or m424 as would like to be able to ride them normally as well), is it worth paying almost twice as much for the m647s?

Was also wondering how good the frame was compared to others and whether it would be a waste upgrading (sometime) to an slx groupset (got cable disk brakes atm which need adjusting quite often and been having some problems with rear gear indexing), and changing the rockshox 2 forks to something else? They currently never really seem to do that much while cycling, not sure whether it's because I haven't adjusted them properly or if they are always like that.

I've also been having punctures more often than I used to (when cycling before) and not sure whether it's fairly standard when doing more moderate off road (fairly dodgy bridalways) or if there is a way of reducing the chances of it happening.

I use my bike for quite a range of things, mainly tracks and bridleways for moderately long rides, with the occasional reasonably technical (for me) downhill. Also doing a running/cycling orienteering type race thing this weekend, details can be found here.

Thanks for any help/advice, I'm not looking to upgrade particularly soon but thinking about future options.

I've got an 08 deluxe, although I don't ride it much over my '06 Coiler.

From what I've read, its a good frame with average components. If I was to upgrade the bike i'd start with a switch to hydraulic brakes. Although I pesonally wouldn't spend much else on upgrades, maybe look out on the sales forum for bargains as they pop up.

For your endurance events I'd start with wheels/tyres. If your getting lots of punctures, look at the pressure your running, if its to low you might be getting lots of pinches. If they just arn't upto the job, look into some stronger/lighter/faster rolling XC tyres. Lighter wheels will help with those climbs but can be an expensive upgrade.

Afraid I can't help with the pedals, the difference will probably be strong/better bearings.

Going from full Deore to full SLX is not really worth the outlay - I'd put the money into a fork like the Reba.

The punctures are just getting vicious thorns stuck in the tread which then gradual get bedded in and cause slow punctures (until you remove the thorn and it then goes flat extremely quickly).

Also with regards to the slx upgrade it would probably be once the current parts start to reach the end of their life, and it seems cheaper to get it as a group rather than one bit at a time (from the sites I've seen).
