Hoping to ride one of above later next week; I don`t normally ride black routes due to the technical descents, but what`s the black like at Glentress--does it get the higher rating from teh distance too?
I`m used to Nant yr Arian riding, (incl Mach 3 chute type stuff / CYB Red Bull /, Karrimor etc S Wales trails, and have ridden WolftRax Laggan RED but black there looks fierce ...thoughts appreciated

The Black at Glentress is Black mainly because of the distance, there are a few sketchy steep descents and small drop offs but nothing the other routes you`ve mentioned don`t have. Give it a go, it`s awesome.

Well, check the website and blog beforehand - there was a note on the website yesterday saying that parts of the black were closed/unrideable following the storm last week which brought down a lot of trees and branches - plus there were some bits still under snow. Latter shold be disappearing fast at the moment, and the guys are working on the trails but best to check before you set off. There's also a board in the Hub carpark which will give you the latest situation on each trail once you get there.

I use HR 60a`s for everything so not really the person to ask regarding tyres, but i`d stick with the Trailrakers if they work well in Wales.

ipersonally would give the black a miss like someone has already said its the distance that makes it a black, didnt really give me a buzz when i rode it the red did but thats my opinion, you may like it?depends on how long you are staying there?i stayed for a week at peebles as im from essex so had time to ride both, also innerleithen would be worth a look

Not stopping, riding a route as passing up further north into Highlands....personally I don`t mind the longer routes. but each to own. Available time may dictate red / black too

i would go for the red at inners over the glentress .
glentress is best when you mix it up black red and blue into one loop
    enjoy :)
  • CC 552 - any chance you could expand on how you have mixed the red / black / blue routes to create your custom trail ?

I have heard the black route is not as fun or as well designed as the red route.
From what I have seen of some of the technical options, seriously hard.
I am normally a black route person who races down hard stuff, but a lot of the obstacles I didn't dare try.

    not your normal blakc route.
Why would I care about 150g of bike weight, I just ate 400g of cookies while reading this?

    sure bolt
from bottom follow black to the mast (black)
from the mast turn down right on fire road to top of spooky (red)
after spooky turn left on to betty blue (blue)
after betty blue turn left to top deliverance (black)
follow black to the end of the wormhole
climb up fire road to the start of the pie run (red)
follow red to the start of cardie hill climb back to buzzards nest car park
from car park follow blue back to the bottom
    hope that helps
my fav route to take any way 8)
