Am trying to get myself ready for the etape, and need to invest in some new gears to get me through...currently have a race-geared chorus 11 set up. I'm thinking either go compact or potentially triple, but am not sure what bits I need to change in order to do so. Can anyone enlighten me please?

For a compact you'll just need to change your chainset and lower the front mech slightly. For a triple you'll need the chainset and shell out for a new bottom bracket, new shifters and, potentially, a new rear mech too.

A 50/34 front with a 12-25 or 12-27 cassette should give you a good spread of gears for the climbs and for the flat and descents.

Just gone new ultegra 50/34 and 11-28. Very pleased. 50 -11 is a 40mph pedal downhill now instead of spinning out on a 12.

Compact it is then - thanks for that. I hope 34-28 will get me up the tourmalet!
