As the forum suggests I'm a bit new to this.
What do you carry in your water bottles?
There's lots of fancy stuff out there but is it any better than ribena?

Well i suppose it's down to distance and need, for me at the moment and until summer hits,i have one 750 full of water and the other at the moment is used for a mobile phone, pump, keys and some spare just incase food,i don't use the chemical / sugar based stuff but that is just my preference.0

Water for most trips, anything over 30 miles or so rich squash. That does the job.0

Foir me it depends on the length of the ride.
Shorter jaunts (under say 30 miles) I dont really bother, food you eat prior to this should do the job fine.
Over that I rate High 5 4:1 mix. Its the best one I have really used, alongside gels.
You can get a sample pack for about £3.99 from a few places to let you try them all.
Ahhh wait a minm its £2.99 here

Hope this helps0 -
Agree with squillino.
<30 normal water, >30 maybe an energy drink, 50+ foods and energy drink.0 -
I always use an energy drink! (high 5 with the adde protein) as it will replace any energy that i use. Well apart from my 8.6 mile each way commute.0
-
Atm I'm using the SIS stuff, which seems reasonable value if you get the big packs. For over 2hr rides then I use 2 x 750ml bottles, one with PSP22, one with GO. For shorter rides I head out with just the GO.0

This is fine except for those that actually want to lose weight. People who are already slim or near race weight want the energy/replacement so they can push harder.0 -

50% water 50% Lidl Ice Tea on any ride that's likely to be over 90 minutes long.
If it's hot (or likely to be over 3 hours out) I might make up a second bottle with either the same or just water.
I've also got one of the screw cap bottle-types with various emergency supplies in, tube, food, lightweight jacket, tenner, that goes in the bag on longer rides.0 -

On longer rides, I don't think you can beat flat Coke, caffeine, sugar and water all in the same place. Otherwise if it's less than 2 hours I tend not to bother and grab a drink from the shop on the way back if I really need one.I want to come back as Niki Gudex's seat0

Water :roll:The UCI are Clowns and Fools0

Short rides of an hour or two - just water
Longer rides I tend to use SIS PSP22 in both bottles , definitely makes a difference. I also tkae some mulebars and some SIS caffeine gels(like the taste)

I have a question for you guys. when out on the road for 4hour+ rides you are going to need to stop and refill. How do you do it?
do you go for straight water fill up
do you take along a little baggie of powdered drink ?
and for the guys using squash do you take along consentrate to water down ?Nothing in life can not be improved with either monkeys, pirates or ninjas

molten lead
I'm quite fortunate in that i've got a squad or rowers to test these things on, the high5 mentioned above is very good, but it seems to be dropping out of favour with the test subjects, who seem to prefer PSP22 during with rego rapid afterwards, which they insist on mixing with milk  They go through the GO very quickly as they prefer mixing it up at 8% rather than 6% regardless of the heat. I might get them some of the nocal to try, but preliminary testing indicates they don't like it at all because it doesn't taste sweet.
On long trips they also go faster on the PSP22 than the Go fwiw0 -
If under 2 hours just 1 x 750ml bottle with water in it. Over 2 hours and I'll probably take a 2nd 750ml bottle with an electrolyte energy drink in it (the make of which will depend on which brand has marketed me their voodoo best when I last needed to purchase any). I mostly rely on food for energy on the bike though (and my copious fat reserves).0

Bottle filled up with: Some ice cubes, ribena (or similar), 2 tea spoon of Glucose powder (£1.38 from sainsbury and last for ages), top up with filtered water..

If im on an hour or so easy/recovery ride then its 500ml of very diluted ribena light...
If Im on an hour pushing hard then ill use zero electrolyte in 750ml bottle...
Anything more than 2 1/2 hours then ill take one 750ml bottle with sis go (blackcurrant) and one 500ml (thats all i can fit on the seat tube) with sis go lemon and lime..
also some blackcurrant jam sandwiches for a snack....

water a spoon or two of sugar and a sninch of table salt. flavours optional.0

Thanks for all the replies.
I'll see how I get on with ribena and mars bars before I start splashing cash.
I think rake is on the right track, I like it simple.
When I'm skiing I like a mars bar an hour so we'll see how that goes. I guess a banana and smoothies might be more healthy though.0 -
Make your own energy drinks by buying maltodextrin, fructose and electrolytes from MyProtein. Costs a fraction of the branded powders. Maltodextrin and fructose work better than plain old sugar. The maltodextrin I have from myprotein is flavourless as well so doesn't make drinks sickly sweet.
Jibberjim has some more elaborate recipes for drinks and gels.More problems but still living....0 -
Rides < 50 miles - 1 750ml bottle of water
Rides > 50 miles - 2 750ml bottles of water

20g maltodextrin,20g dextrose,water,splash of fruit juice and a pinch of lo-salt.0

Mostly water as it isn't so great for the teeth drinking sugar all day.
For hard sessions I had SIS psp22 last year, but I'm using SIS Go this year - stops cramp etc.Racing for Fluid Fin Race Team in 2012 - www.fluidfin.co.uk0 -
At the moment i just use diluted fruit drink, when i start serious training for up coming sportives it will be the SIS electrolyte sports fuel, a few gels, and my jelly babies0
-
I tend to mix PSP22 lemon with GO lemon and lime on a 50:50 basis in one bottle and GO tropical in another, just for a taste difference as I get bored easily when I go out for a long ride. Also take a bag with drink mix on a hot day, just in case. For my commute if I push hard (12 miles each way) I tend to have water in one bottle and REGO in the other to drink when I get to work.0
-
I virtually always take 2 bottles, and like most others here for shorter rides (say 2- 2.5 hrs) I just use water. For events and longer rides I use the SIS Energy stuff (I think! The one with the carbs and electrolytes in).
If I might need to refill I'd probably start looking when the first one's empty, so I've got one with just water and one with the go juice still in it. I think taking some extra powder or whatever with you would just be a pain in the a$$, although things like Nuun tablets are both a bit more portable and less faff to actually mix up.0 -
I've started using High5 Zero anti-cramp. No carbs, no sugar. Come as tablets in a tube you dissolve in water so there easy to carry around.
I also love the taste and the slight fizzyness; citrus and cherry mix for me.0 -
today just done a 60 mile ride and took two 500 ml bottles one with water and one with lucosade sport and it was just enough, and had one torq gel at the midway point, mind you i wasnt pushing it at 17.2 mph ave so didnt sweat much today, if this was in mid summer i would need double what i took today.0
