Buying a Hybrid Bike

Hi,
Really sorry to clog up the forums with yet another what bike post but if you could give a bit of advice it'd be great.
At the moment I have a pretty old and large, standard not-quite mountain bike. I do quite a lot of long leisurely rides but next year at university plan to additionally use the bike a lot more for commuting. And so want to buy myself a nice new hyrbid bike as I'd prefer a bike with thinner road-like tyres but still prefer a more leisurely upright seating position.
In any case my budget is around £250 (which websites seem to suggest is a good baseline for a decent bike). I've had a look on the Evan's cycles website but with lots of different options and not many with any reviews I was hoping people could steer me towards a few you could suggest. There seem to be some really good deals going on end of line 2009 ranges but unfortunately most of them only have small size .
In any case any sort of feedback would be greatly appreciated,
Alex

I'd go to Halfords and look at the Carrera Subway.0
-
or take a look at ebay there's a no of Ridgeback Flights / T series going at the moment; a few of them have gone recently for £1850

If you can stretch another £50 these are good - shame you didn't ask a week ago as they were £250 for the Easter weekend:

Add £50 quid to your budget and get a specialized sirrus hybrid. Or you can pick one up cheap on ebay, only a year or two old.Pinno, מלך אידיוט וחרא מכונאי0

I'm really happy with this:

v-brakes version is a cheaper, and only a bit more than your budget.
I managed to get mine for the same price as V brake version.0
