Looking to upgrade my wheels from the standard bontrager on my trek 1.2

Hub going after nearly 3000 miles and want some new ones basically. not looking to spend loads, got budget of £200 for wheels but prob only want to sort the back one this month. Then got bout another £100 to spend on brake calipers. Decided to do this instead of getting new madone (got 2 stone to lose before I can justify getting a carbon, I can lose weight off me before the bike :) ) but i will get my madone when the weight has gone

Anyone any good ideas for getting a back wheel for about £100. Preferably want 32 spokes, and I run 23c tyres. Also a decent 9 speed cassette as think current one is dying, have a new chain to put on.

Hopefully getting my current wheel repaired under warrenty but want these wheels for winter time

Thanks in advance

Fulcrum Racing 5s...Merlin have the older Evolution version at £165 for a pair (assuming you want Shimano freehub) http://www.merlincycles.co.uk/?fn=produ ... goryId=167
Had them on the Viner since my prang enforced an upgrade. Not 32 spokes (20 & 24) but these are more than up to the job. They look great and run beautifully.

    Cheers, look decent

Not really bothered about the freehub, should I go shimano though??

was after the 32 just for reasurance as im currently 15 stone 4 (and coming down) :)

not sure whether I should go see what lbs have, as then if its faulty ie spoke brakes after short time i can take it back there

    hmm what to do.

is rim tape easy enough to put on the rim?

Should you go Shimano? Well, if you've got Shimano or SRAM gearing, yes- Campag freehubs won't work.

Planet X Model C's? You get a set for £100, so you have spare front. They also have Model B's that are similar but with I think 20/24 spokes.

Mavic Aksiums are good at this price point. Could also go down the handbuilt route, ambrosio excelights on zenith or ultegra hubs would be about 230 quid a pair. I can recommend wheelsmiths for them.

Planet-X B or C as already said same wheels just less spokes on the B's dont bother with the Aksiums I have them, yes they look good, light etc etc but dont hold up as well as the Planet-X I have them to, I also have an openpro CD handbuilt set which to be honest are also no better than the PX, I should bleeding work for them I should anyway, PX roll perfectly, not heavy not as pretty as the Aksiums but stronger and more repairable.

£100 the set oh and whilst looking at the PX website take a look at the Ti CNC brakeset oooooh! super flash and lighter than dura ace for £110 the set, I have them in gold because i'm a TART!

Those brakes are only going to match your bike if it's made of lego ITB

As fro Rim Tape - not sure if they need it - the 1's and 0's certainly don't. Never used the 5's but I own 2 Fulcrum wheelsets and they've been are superb.

I thought Planet X model C's before readingthe thread so glad to see a few mentions already. £100 for brakes sounds like a lot - not really that much scope for improving on a standard set of calipers, but the Planet X ones look nice and bling! Pads seem to make more difference, I like Kool stop although Swiss stop are also meant to be good.

Yes but when combined with gold KMC SXL chain, Gold Token ceramic bottom bracket and seat collar and eventually gold cables they look PIMP

    +1

I've got Ambrosio Evolution TQBs on Campag hubs and they've been great so far....handle all the rutted lanes around these parts just fine. And they look a lot more, uh, restrained than some factory wheels - I just don't like the garish look (like ITB's junior meccano brakes) ;-)

Thanks for that, wasnt aware it made any difference!

them wheels do look really nice, and when you say more repairable does that mean someone like me who has never serviced a hub or wheel could maintain them?

As for them brake calipers, yes nice, but dont think will suit my bike, I think Ill just get some shimano 105's to replace the current ones as didnt realise could get them so cheap, and also might replace the shifters as I knocked one when I had a fall last september. Oh ill almost have enough parts for a winter hack :)

going to try out friend ss next week sometime to see if I like it or not, and then if my work let me have another bike ill be ordering this http://www.trekbikes.com/uk/en/bikes/ur ... ddistrict/

just out of interest why are them wheels only £100 when some of the others mentioned like the fulcrams are nearly twice as much? Im tempted to order them at that price. Do they come with rim tape? prob daft question but just so I know to order some and is it easy enough to put on?

Also looking it says for 10 speed cassette, will a 9 speed fit? and to be honest I dont want them looking too flash, dont want to be a target for thieves, just want new wheels :)

sorry for all the questions but want to get the right ones.

Think im going to go with these, especially for the price. have you had experience with them? and yes £100 is prob too much for brake calipers, prob just get some shimano 105s. It just riding bike through the winter with no guards has made the calipers on my current bike almost dead !

Ive been looking into a new set of wheels and am almost sold on these Pro Lites.... Not sure what everyone else thinks. Bit more than your budget though.
