In case anyone didn't notice and, like me, spent most of their wheel budget going on a messy weekend :(

    They don't seem particularly light.
Why does everyone rave about them again?

Is it just the price, or am I missing something here?

Genuine question. They don't have any campag ones in anyway...

    What's lighter for £99?

What also has bladed spokes and a 30mm deep rim?

What also has easily repairable standard j-bend spokes?

you need to spend around £300 to get lighter, they are robust (even toured on them), the hubs are ultra smooth running, they made my bike noticeably livelier on acceleration and climbing (previously using open pro's/ultegra), I really don't think they can be beaten at even twice this price.

they're not particularly heavy either. Like someone else said - you need to spend a LOT more than £99 to buy a lighter, better set of wheels - unless you've got a link to a better bargain...??

Errr, nope. Which is why I just tried to order some... :)

But my credit card failed.... :(
  • Good - that's next winter's wheels sorted!! :D:D
Best £99 I ever spent on cycling kit. Rode on them all last year on my commuter and winter trainer - 12K on crap roads and they are still running smooth and true!! :D:D

They do look really good too.

Little bit concerned about the height, if you will, of the braking surface. There's a mm or so of pad that's above or below the braking surface depending on position of the pad.

Is this normal and if so is it a problem?

The older ones did have a problem with the freehub being chewed but that's been sorted now and i'm not even sure if that was just shimano, or just 9 speed I think .....

The hub issue is common to all aluminium freehubs (on all makes of wheels) designed for 9 or 10 speed, the splines are short to accommodate 9 speed cassettes, but using a 10 speed cassette will chew them up. The latest Planet-X wheels are 10 speed only, having taller splines, fitting only 10 speed cassettes, and no chewing. You can specify and order 9 speed hubs from them if you need them, but if you need 10 speed, get 10 speed.

Just have to say how tough they really are.

My light came lose from my bars a couple of months ago and light went straight into the front wheel. I had a car behind me so I couldn't just stop dead. The wheel took 4 bangs from the light dangling on the battery lead before it actually dropped off the lead onto the road. When I got stopped I was sure I must have a taken a few spokes out. Not one spoke broke. Indeed 2 spokes have slight twists on them however they have shown no sign of trouble in the 2 months since. Also should say the light actually worked after it too so must say was happy on both accounts. Could have cost me a fortune.

I ride them all year round in all weathers so agree that they are great anytime of the year as well.

I have one set of the older wheels which the cassette chewed. I just learned to take the cassette off every month or so so that they never become too deeply embeded and they are still going strong.
