Which Ribble bike advice

Hello,
Just wondering who out there has a Ribble bike. After some research they seem to offer great value, but there is a lot of options. Firstly Alu or Carbon, I know Carbon is the wonder materail but at a sub £1000 (bike to work) I wonder how good they are over alu, and would money be better spent on wheel upgrades and groupset. I know athesetically I prefer the sloping top tube options, but carbon wise there is the Nero, Sportive and Gran Fondo and alu or the em2 with carbon seatstays, whats the difference, (I am a mtb biker). I will be using the bike to commute, when the trails are a bog so that will 11.5months of year!, but whilst a novice roadie I have nearly 20yrs mtb experience and quite happy to do 100mile off road, so I suspect once I start doing road stuff I will be inspired to go beyond the commute and do some epics, not into racing expect for beating mates, comfort is important over pure speed, I can handle ultra stiff for a couple of hours but after that starts to kill, and our roads now look like something out of Iraq after cluster bombing. Constructive thoughts and comments appreciated.
