Tubs

I've gone and accidentally bought some tubs on ebay. Yep didnt think they could be anything other than clinchers. Guy insists on sending them. I know nothing about tubs except they dont have tubes in and you use glue. The wheels are Mavic Ksyrium SSC tubulars, in 'great condition' (yet to see), with tyres and cost me £187. Have I totally messed up?

I am extremely amateur but ended up with tubs on a cheap-ass single speed project. I like them because:
- I feel very clever having tubs
- I find putting them on very satisfying (I used sticky tape instead of glue)
There are other more serious-minded reaons to prefer tubs, but apart from the huge cost of the tyres, I think they rock and you should keep them.Андрю

When you ride them you will wonder why it took you so long.I have only two things to say to that; Bo***cks0

Thanks - what is the tape you use please? I am coming round to the idea of these wheels having spoken to the LBS and getting your feedback.

advice from my wheelbuilder, Derek at wheelsmith
"Rule of thumb for tape: Continental and Tufo tubs - use Tufo Extreme tape. Vittoria, Veloflex and other Italian tubs - use Velox Jantex. And if you are doing hard cornering crits mostly - use glue. Conti glue for Conti tubs....you get the picture. Also, generally Conti tubs are harsher but last longer. Italian tubs are smooth but cut easier. There is no 100% puncture proof tub but the Vittoria Pitstop sealant is excellent stuff and it takes 30secs to re-inflate a tub with them."0 -

I think you will enjoy the tubs!
Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner!0 -
Cheers Alex - it was a rather quick and panicked message. But phew, all seems to be working out for the best. Ebay is not a good way to get my heart rate up though!! Glad your endeavours seem to be going well..

Taking my tubs out in the wet for the first time later. Looking forward to seeing how they compare to clinchers. They do feel faster when I've tried them in the dry, but I think that it must largely be placebo effect as the difference is unlikely to be more than 5watts (from what I've seen in tests). Still nice though!Racing for Fluid Fin Race Team in 2012 - www.fluidfin.co.uk0

Velox Jantex seems like rubbish to me. The backing paper kept breaking and it didn't seem to stick that well to carbon rims. Used glue in the end; Continental for carbon rims but with Vittoria tubs, hope that's OK, couldn't get hold of Vittoria glue.Pegoretti

Nothing beats the sound and feel of a 'roaring' tub on a nice smooth road.Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..0

So I took them for a test ride on Saturday. Well I am in love! Yes it was a sunny glorious day, the birds were singing and the sky was quiet - but they are so lovely, the wheels (Mavic ssc) and the tubs. A part of me wanted to say the my old wheels were just as fast and fun but they are not. Unless this fog of love lifts and I see my folly, I continue to gibber about riding over butter and having pleasant feelings in my teeth!.
