Ok got the new bike took it out for a ride down wharnecliffe yesterday and im not entirely happy with the Elixir's that are fitted?? The stopping power is good Im just not that impressed with the feel? I prefer a firm feel lever where as the Elixir gives a sloppy spongey feel after bite point?
Does any one know of a braided hose kit for them? As this made my hopes a little better!

There have been a lot of reported cases of the 'Factory Bleed' being less than desireable with Elixirs, a couple of lads here bled them out of the box and had no problems at all....
They are excellent and very powerful stoppers if set up correctly!!0 -
Cheers for that give that a whirl first then!!
They were ok with stopping power just a bit spongey!!0 -

Mine were the same at first, then after a couple of rides firmed up without the need for a bleed.......0 -
first of all check the rotor are not being moved by the pads and then let them bed in."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Update!!
Bled them at 1700hrs they felt a little better!!
Been for a quick pedal and dragged the brakes all the way round and just done a full fluid replen!!
They feel better.
Going to give em a week of riding to bed in then if they get no better go for some braided goodridge hose I think??0 -
let me know how it goes. Got the same brakes on my stumpy and my rear is giving me no end of trouble. No firm braking point, have cleaned rotor and pads (which have plenty of life left in them still - only just changed), have re-bled and when I yank the brake I still only get a slow rolling stop. Not sure where to go now.GT XC1 - the harder you ride it, the better it is

Went for a long ride today up at dalby!!
I found the brakes nearly useless!! Had to pump the lever to get a decent bite point before the ride. Very little power in the front brake, the rear was a little better but nothing compared to other brakes I have had. The hotter the brakes got the better the braking became, got the bike home and they felt as if they had lost all fluid in them after a few pumps they regained some power but less than before!
Pedalled to work to put some leave in and they got a bit better, came home stripped them down cleaned everything, fully flushed the system with Dot 5.1 performance fluid and then fully bled and replened, scrubbed the pads with some wet and dry cleaned everything with Isopropanol put it all back together and still no joy? I am at wits end with them and Ive only had the bike a week!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
After a bit of research before comming on here found that MBR have the same issues with a set of Elixir R's on a long term test cannondale rush. And a few people have problems with them on stumpy's?????????
How can you pay £3000 for a bike and the brakes be this shite??? Ive tried everything in my engineering capacity and the next is to take the bike back to the shop and get them to sort it I think!!!!! However I feel the spotty tech shop urk who set them up in the first place may be the route of all my evils !!!!!!!!!!!0 -
sounds like a crap bleed and poor set up."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

I'm not convinced Nick. I've maintained my hydraulics for a few years now and these Elixir R's are causing me no end of issues. Similar to Aaron I took mine back to the shop and found that an O ring in the lever had perished. Happened again a few months later.
This latest problem I have feels different and is not showing the tell tale signs of a bit of fluid near the reach adjuster this time (aaron - if yours have a bit of damp around the adjuster it is probably the o-ring). Hence my question if anybody had any other ideas.GT XC1 - the harder you ride it, the better it is

i have never said that they may not be damaged.
but what he is now saying sounds like he has not bled them and there is still air in them and poorly aligned.
but as i have not actually worked on his brakes that is all i can say.
but what should have been done before he started playing with them was checked the alignment and if that was fine then back to the shop if they did not get better after bedding in as it would be a warranty claim.
as it is now he maybe lucky and they do something but as he has taken things into his own hands. opps."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

I have Elixer R's (an an R SL) on my Stumpy, SX Trail and Big Hit and they have worked flawlessly on all 3 bikes so far.
Been running the SX Trail and Stumpy for 7 or 8 months (and had to replace the pads on the Stumpy due to waring them out) while the ones on the Big Hit are new and installed today
Bedded the pads in a little out on the street before riding proper then had about 4 hours in the woods and they were spot on.
Really no idea why you're having issues, the 3 pairs I have have all worked great.Canyon Spectral AL 9.0 EX

I am a qualified aircraft engineer and know how to align brakes and bleed and maintain hydraulic systems!!! Trust me they have been set up by a LBS and were crap then by me, bled through and all the air removed from the system and the DOT 5.1 Fluid before I put it in the system!!
I have now had the brakes in an avid approved LBS this morning and they are baffled they have just replaced the brake set up completely and appologise for my problems.
Will update after ride on Saturday!!!!!0 -
good luck Aaron - would appreciate if you could update here and let me know?
I'm in two minds as to take it back to the shop under warranty and get it sorted (gutted it has chosen now to go as the evenings are getting lighter and weather more 'friendly') but hey ho. Else I might take the plunge and swap it out.GT XC1 - the harder you ride it, the better it is

Trek replaced the brkes on waranty the new set turned up and were just as bad!!! Went back to the bike shop and explained I was really un-happy that I paid £3000 for a bike and the brakes are not upto scratch!!!!!
Trek Uk said I could pick a new set of brakes from the shop and they would re-emburse the LBS so Ive no got a set of Hope tech V2 with braided hoses and floating rotors!!!
Did a 40 mile pedal today around lady bower and they're mint!!
Problem over!!0 -
