colnago own brand

Hi,
My choice under the R2W scheme has effectively come down to either the much lauded Tiagra CAAD9, or the Colnago Prima. I will of course test them both before I decide but I've found relatively little information about the Colnago other than a very good review on bikeradar and forum posts about it being poor value for money as you are paying for the name (with little evidence to suggest why this is the case) despite the finish quality being described as "excellent".

I guess the problem is that many of the components (e.g. tyres, wheels, brake calipers) are branded as colnago's own rather than being a reputable 3rd party so they are potentially of unknown quality.

Does anyone have any first hand knowledge whether these things are poor quality compared to the shimano/schwalbe equivilents on the CAAD9? Maybe they're actually an upgrade?

Rich

  • ok, constructive answer time:

You have identified the issue yourself, that the Colnago branded kit is an unknown quantity, whereas with the Caad 9 you know exactly what you're getting. That said, at this level I'd be surprised if it was anything other than satisfactory.

IIRC the reviews for both Prima and CAAD 9 is that he frame is the strong point, and justifies upgraded kit. I.e either frame is a keeper and therefore will sooner or later need kitted out with a newgruppo/wheels, and when you do it'll be a better standard.

I guess what I'm saying is don't worry unduly about the stock kit, go for whichever frame geometry suits you better.

I have the Primavera frame (basically the Prima with an external headset) with Centaur kit in the my bikes section, you can check that out.

    Excellent, thank you.

How do you find the Primavera?
